Romy: from intern to creative

Creatives with a passion for their craft: Romy van der Spoel is one of those MM’ers who once started as an intern and has now found her place in the team as an all-round creative. Creating animations has now become her ‘specialty’!

Romy van der Spoel takes you through her career at MM.

Art Academy

“During my graduation year at St.-Joost School of Art & Design in Breda, I ended up at MM for my internship,” Romy says. “My mother knew Peter Huijzer, a client of MM, who connected me with Martijn Muller. That’s how I got started. What immediately appealed to me was the young team. At other internships, I often felt like ‘the intern’: the one who fetches the bread. Here, I was given responsibility right away and was allowed to contribute ideas and design.”

Back at MM

The internship went so well that Romy returned after graduating. “I could start working here immediately! That combination of responsibility, a close-knit team, and plenty of room to learn was exactly what I was looking for.”

You Can Learn to Animate

Romy has developed a lot over the past three years. “I’ve taken courses in After Effects, both for beginners and advanced users. Although I laid the foundation during my studies, it was only at MM that I really became enthusiastic about video editing and animation. Especially because I was given the space here to immediately put my knowledge into practice.”

In practice

Romy’s interest in animation grew quickly. “By now, I have a lot of After Effects skills that I use for various clients. For the website of Stout ConceptenHUIS, for example, I created an animation with moving figures and dynamic backgrounds. I could really let my creativity run wild there! I notice that I really enjoy it and want to continue growing in this field.”

Pleasant working atmosphere

What makes MM so special? “The team,” says Romy without hesitation. “Everyone is young, enthusiastic, and helpful. It’s a pleasant, close-knit atmosphere where you can always turn to someone. In addition, the work is incredibly diverse. From copywriting to designing complete brand identities: we do it all!”

Growth

For Romy, growth is key. “I want to develop further in After Effects. I think it would be amazing to create larger and more complex animations. I’m also interested in web development. I’m still at the beginning, but I want to explore both the technical and design sides further. I already really enjoy designing and filling websites, but there is still so much to learn in this area.”

Besides her work, Romy continues to make time for her hobbies. “I live in Dordrecht, am engaged, and love reading English books, especially thrillers and romcoms that I discover via TikTok. I also enjoy running and spending time with friends.”
