As a user of Google Analytics, you will gradually need to make the transition to Google’s new measurement method. Universal Analytics is being replaced by Google Analytics 4, or GA4 for short. In this blog, our account manager Evert den Toom explains what this transition means for you.
Universal Analytics will no longer collect measurement data as of July 1, 2023. With GA4, Google is introducing a new measurement method. For now, the old measurement data will still be retained, but Google will no longer track with the old measurement code.
Proactive installation of Google Analytics 4
We believe it is wise to proactively address these upcoming changes. That is why, in July, August, and September of this year, we will already be installing the GA4 measurement method for all our clients for whom we manage Analytics. Since Universal Analytics properties will no longer collect new data as of July 1, 2023, it is high time to start with the new version, Google Analytics 4! After July 1, 2023, Universal Analytics will remain accessible for at least six more months to review previously processed data and export any data you wish to keep.

Smooth transition to the new measurement method
By anticipating the upcoming changes early, we ensure a smooth transition to the new measurement method. Our aim is to completely relieve ‘our’ Google Analytics users of any concerns regarding this topic. Naturally, we will inform everyone when we carry out the installation.
Do I need to switch?
Are you unsure whether you need to switch? Then check which version of Google Analytics you are using. The rule of thumb is: if you created the property before October 14, 2020, you are probably using Universal Analytics and you need to switch. If you created the property after October 14, 2020, you are probably using GA4 and you don’t need to do anything. Still not sure? Then check the property ID. If it starts with UA, you are using Universal Analytics. If the property ID consists only of numbers, you are using GA4.
